Transparent moulded parts ruthlessly reveal what you can’t see with solid-coloured plastics: streaks or air inclusions are immediately visible with transparent plastic and can only be eliminated through optimal process control. PMMA is a scratch-resistant and transparent material with very high rigidity and good weather resistance. However, it has low toughness and is therefore sensitive to impact and stress cracking.
Polysulfones are rigid and very transparent with high strength, rigidity and hardness – these plastics retain their high dimensional stability up to 150°C, the glass transition temperature is between 190°C and 230°C. PET is highly fracture-resistant and retains its shape even at temperatures above 80°C. However, it has low impact strength and good sliding and wear behaviour. PET is resistant to many chemicals, which is why it is frequently used in the food industry as well as in laboratories and medicine.
